Intent

At Woodchurch Road Primary School, we want all children to become physically literate through the delivery of high quality Physical Education, School Sport & Physical Activity, whilst raising awareness of Health & Wellbeing that will lead to lifelong participation and enjoyment of sport and physical activity. We value the importance of every child accessing all areas of our inclusive Physical Education curriculum.  Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Woodchurch Road, not only through the sporting skills taught, but also through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

Our PE mission at Woodchurch Road is to empower pupils to:

  • Lead motivated and healthy lifestyles inspired by their experiences at Woodchurch Road

  • Leave with a strong knowledge of health and wellbeing

  • Aspire pupils to become ‘sports leaders’ and represent sports teams confidently in their futures

  • Be healthy, social, happy and active young people

It is our intent at Woodchurch Road to teach children life skills that will positively affect their future. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical activities. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

Physical Education aims to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing in our children now and for their future. Physical fitness is an important part of leading a healthier lifestyle. It teaches self-discipline and that to be successful you must work hard, show resilience and have the determination to believe that anything can be achieved.

Implementation

Pupils at Woodchurch Road participate in weekly high quality PE and sporting activities.  Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and challenges. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events supported by our local cluster of primary schools and the School Games organisers. This is an inclusive approach, which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also children’s well-being.

Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. We motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.

Together we will:

  • Work in partnership with families and the wider community to achieve the highest standards of learning and behaviour.

  • Develop and maintain an ethos of mutual respect and promote self-esteem, responsibility, independence and confidence whilst recognising individual strengths.

  • Promote positive attitudes and understanding of healthy lifestyles and physical activity.

  • Provide a learning environment, which enables children to become happy, secure and resilient.

  • Build on the positive relationships with home and the wider school, national and global communities to promote respect and inclusion for all.

  • Prepare all children for the challenges ahead, embracing technology and promoting a life-long love of learning.

Impact

Pupils leave our school with the best opportunity of being able to swim confidently and competently through two weeks of swimming lessons in years 4, 5 and 6. Children are encouraged to participate in our broad range of competitions and extra-curricular activities, which help to extend learning and character development beyond the classroom. Learning outside the school environment opportunities are regularly provided, such as residential visits to the Colomendy in Year 6 and a variety of sports festivals that we take part in across the year.

We are proud to of our efforts in attaining The School Games Mark. We have achieved both the bronze and silver awards. This rewards schools for a commitment to the development of competition across the school and into the community. It puts physical activity and competitive sport at the heart of our school and provides children at Woodchurch Road with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best.
