Council Crew
Council Crew - An Ethic of Everyone at WRA
At Woodchurch Road Academy, we believe that every child is a leader. Our council Crew system replaces traditional class representatives with inclusive, mixed-age groups where leadership and voice are shared among all students.
Each Crew is led by two Year 6 pupils who guide discussions and activities without adult intervention, allowing them to develop crucial leadership skills. This structure ensures that from Reception through to Year 6, every child has the chance to lead and contribute, fostering a community where every voice is heard and valued.
Our council Crews are named after the school's core values, which are reflected in our performances and daily interactions: Integrity, Trust, Honesty, Compassion, Perseverance, Resilience, Teamwork, Courage, Reasoning, Curiosity, Reflection, and Critical Thinking. These values underpin our commitment to nurturing well-rounded, principled leaders who can make thoughtful, ethical decisions.
Oracy is at the heart of our Council Crews, as we recognise the power of spoken communication in developing confidence, critical thinking, and the ability to engage in meaningful dialogue. Our Crews provide a platform for every child to practise these skills, ensuring that their ideas and opinions contribute to the life of the school.
Through the rituals and routines of our Council Crews, we uphold the British values of democracy, mutual respect, and individual liberty. Each child's unique perspective is valued, and their leadership potential is cultivated in an environment of trust and collaboration.
At Woodchurch Road Academy, every child is encouraged to lead, reflect, and grow, embodying the ethos of Crew and shaping the inclusive, dynamic community we are proud to call our own.
