Jigsaw - PSHE

Intent, Implementation, Impact Statement

Intent

Our intention is that when our children leave Woodchurch Road Academy, they will do so as courageous and curious individuals, ready to grapple with challenges and embrace opportunities in today’s diverse society. As part of our crew, they will develop the confidence and resilience to navigate an ever-changing world, believing in themselves and knowing that with determination, anything is possible.

Through our PSHE curriculum, students gain the knowledge and skills to engage bravely with the wider curriculum and prepare for their future roles in a global community. We nurture their ability to think critically, act with integrity, and develop a strong sense of self-worth. Our curriculum fosters British values while promoting spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical growth.

Our Relationships and Sex Education empowers children to build and maintain healthy relationships, ensuring they feel safe and supported both now and in the future. By equipping them with the tools to manage life’s complexities, we strengthen their mental well-being and prepare them to lead with courage and compassion.

Implementation

PSHE - Thomas Gray Primary School

The Jigsaw scheme of work aims to develop the “whole child” through a spiral curriculum. Weekly hour lessons are taught across the school.  Half-termly units develop knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of:

  • Autumn 1: Being Me in My World Includes understanding my own identity and how I fit well in the class, school and global community. Jigsaw Charter established.

  • Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference Includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included) and understanding

  • Spring 1: Dreams and Goals Includes goal-setting, aspirations, who do I want to become and what would I like to do for work and to contribute to society

  • Spring 2: Healthy Me Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices, sleep, nutrition, rest and exercise

  • Summer 1: Relationships Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills, bereavement and loss

  • Summer 2: Changing Me Includes Relationships and Sex Education in the context of coping positively with change.

Our cohesive vision empowers children to understand their role in the world and to bravely contribute to it. With a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, resilience, and both mental and physical well-being, Jigsaw equips our crew to engage with PSHE education in a meaningful and relevant way. Through these lessons, children courageously grapple with real-world challenges while developing mindfulness techniques that enhance their emotional awareness, concentration, and focus.

British Values, along with spiritual, moral, social, and cultural concepts, are embedded across our broad and balanced curriculum. Our PSHE program fosters curiosity and encourages children to explore diverse perspectives with an open mind. School assemblies and crew provide a platform for courageous conversations, where children’s curiosity is stimulated, their beliefs are challenged, and their understanding is deepened. Additionally, special events, key campaigns, and themed days or weeks create opportunities for children to engage with pressing societal issues, preparing them to navigate the complexities of the world with confidence and compassion.

Impact

By the time children leave us, they will:

  • Embody the spirit of a courageous crew, showing kindness and respect toward themselves and others.

  • Have the bravery and curiosity to explore new challenges, push their limits, and persevere in the face of adversity.

  • Take responsibility for their actions, demonstrating integrity and resilience.

  • Have a deep understanding of how to stay safe, maintain their well-being, and foster strong, healthy relationships.

  • Appreciate and celebrate their role within a diverse, multicultural society, recognizing the value of inclusion and unity.

  • Boldly demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual Respect, Rule of Law, and Liberty.

  • Be actively preparing for life and work in modern Britain, ready to grapple with new experiences and opportunities.

  • Be equipped to ‘reach for the stars’ with confidence, determination, and a strong sense of purpose.

Assessment within discrete PSHE lessons will ensure that pupils continuously build on their skills and knowledge over time. This will highlight their progression and foster consistency between parallel classes. Clear learning objectives enable teachers to be intentional in their approach, ensuring lessons challenge and inspire students. Engaging activities will encourage children to reflect on their personal growth, self-assess their development, and identify areas for improvement with bravery and honesty.

Individual progress will be recognized and celebrated within the classroom, the wider school and parents/carers. To ensure the lasting impact of PSHE across the whole school community, the PSHE leader will actively monitor the subject by engaging in discussions with pupils, gathering evidence from written activities and maintaining ongoing dialogue with colleagues. This collective effort will ensure that every child is empowered to thrive, both now and in their future lives.
