Intent
At Woodchurch Road Academy, our Spanish curriculum is designed to foster curiosity, communication, and a sense of belonging within a global community. Through learning another language, children develop empathy, respect, and appreciation for cultural diversity. Aligned with our ethos – ‘Empowering Potential, Embracing Diversity’ – Spanish enables pupils to express themselves confidently, make connections across cultures, and understand their place in an interconnected world. The curriculum aligns fully with the National Curriculum for Languages (KS2).
Implementation
Spanish is taught across Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6). As Spanish is new to the school, all pupils will begin with Step 1 in 2025. The curriculum is structured around five key skill strands: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Intercultural Understanding. Lessons are sequenced progressively through half-termly themes, designed to build vocabulary and grammatical understanding incrementally. Pupils engage in songs, stories, games, and conversations to promote active learning and enjoyment. Digital tools such as Seesaw are used to capture pronunciation and progress. Cross-curricular links are made with Geography, PSHE, Art, and Music to deepen cultural understanding and connect language learning with real-world contexts.
Impact
Pupils leave Key Stage 2 with a developing ability to communicate in another language, demonstrating curiosity and confidence. They show respect for other cultures, use basic vocabulary and structures with increasing fluency, and recognise patterns in language. Progress is assessed through observation, participation, recall of vocabulary, and short written and oral tasks. Evidence is captured through Seesaw portfolios and teacher assessments, ensuring learning is visible and celebrated.
