Geography

Intent

At Woodchurch Road Academy, our Geography curriculum is built to inspire a deep sense of curiosity, wonder, and responsibility about the world and its people. Rooted in Expeditionary Learning (EL) and our belief in learning without limits, our approach empowers children to explore and understand the complexity of the Earth — its landscapes, environments, cultures, and systems — through real-world, project-based learning experiences.

Our intent is to equip all pupils, regardless of background or ability, with the geographical knowledge, skills, and global awareness they need to make informed, responsible choices as citizens of the world. Geography at Woodchurch Road fosters an understanding of place, change, interdependence, sustainability, and global citizenship. It encourages pupils to see themselves as agents of change, capable of making a meaningful difference in their communities and beyond.

We aim to develop:

  • A strong understanding of physical and human geography, both local and global

  • A mastery of key geographical skills including map reading, fieldwork, data interpretation, and spatial awareness

  • A sense of curiosity and commitment to environmental responsibility

  • Critical thinking about global issues such as climate change, migration, inequality, and sustainability

Implementation

Our Geography curriculum is delivered through Expeditionary Learning Projects, which are multi-disciplinary, purpose-driven, and aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Geography is not taught in isolation but is embedded within authentic, interconnected projects that provide real-world context and encourage pupils to take ownership of their learning.

Each project includes:

  • Enquiry-led investigations that begin with compelling questions and real-world problems

  • Fieldwork opportunities that connect children with their local area and environment

  • Use of digital tools, maps, atlases, and data sources to develop spatial and analytical skills

  • Integration of geographical themes across subjects such as science, history, and literacy

  • Opportunities for pupils to present their findings, take action, and share their learning with others — reinforcing purpose and audience

The curriculum follows a clear progression of skills and knowledge from EYFS through to Year 6, allowing for depth and mastery. It ensures that concepts such as place, space, scale, interdependence, and sustainability are revisited and built upon over time.

Differentiation and inclusive practice are embedded, ensuring all children can access and succeed in Geography, regardless of background or starting point.

Impact

By the time they leave Woodchurch Road Academy, our pupils will:

  • Have a secure understanding of the world’s physical and human geography

  • Be able to ask and answer geographical questions, analyse data, interpret maps, and present findings with confidence

  • Demonstrate a sense of global responsibility and environmental awareness

  • Recognise the interconnectedness of people, places, and environments

  • Be equipped with the geographical knowledge and cultural capital they need for the next stage of their education and life beyond school

Through our Expeditionary Learning approach, pupils not only know more and remember more, but also care more — about the planet, their place in the world, and the role they can play in creating a fairer, more sustainable future. Evidence of learning is celebrated in pupil books, displays, exhibitions, and outcomes that have meaning beyond the classroom.

At Woodchurch Road Academy, Geography is more than a subject — it is a vehicle for empowerment, encouraging every child to explore without limits and to grow as informed, active citizens of the world.
