Art
Intent
At Woodchurch Road Academy, we believe every child is an artist. Our art curriculum empowers all pupils to think, work, and communicate as artists.
We aim to:
Develop mastery of artistic skills across drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, collage, 3D, and creative response.
Foster curiosity, imagination, and resilience through meaningful projects connected to global cultures, local heritage, and social justice themes.
Celebrate diversity and identity, ensuring pupils see themselves reflected in the artists studied and understand the role of art in activism and change.
Provide every child with the confidence to express ideas, emotions, and perspectives through visual language.
Implementation
Our curriculum is built on a clear progression of knowledge and skills from Year 1 to Year 6, ensuring secure foundations and increasing complexity.
We achieve this through:
Strands of learning: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Textiles & Collage, 3D, and Creative Response revisited and deepened each year.
Working artistically: Developing understanding of line, shape, colour, texture, tone, form, and space.
Inspiration from diverse artists: Local, national, and global artists are studied to broaden cultural awareness and connect art to social and environmental issues.
Integration with curriculum themes: Art projects are linked to history, geography, science, and social justice topics (e.g. climate activism, belonging, identity).
Sketchbooks as journeys: Every child keeps a sketchbook to document exploration, reflection, and refinement.
Impact
By the time they leave Woodchurch Road Academy, children will:
Have developed mastery in the formal elements of art and the confidence to use a wide range of media and techniques.
Be able to articulate their creative intentions, evaluate their outcomes, and talk meaningfully about the work of others.
Recognise the cultural, historical, and emotional significance of art and its role in shaping society.
Produce artwork that demonstrates individuality, imagination, and technical skill - work that is both beautiful and purposeful. Leave with a strong sense of identity and belonging, knowing that their voice matters and their creativity can change the world.
