Art

Intent
At Woodchurch Road Academy, our Art curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, foster curiosity, and celebrate individuality, in line with our vision of Learning Without Limits. We believe every child is an artist, and through our inclusive and enriching Art provision, we aim to:
Nurture confident, expressive individuals who are not afraid to take creative risks.
Develop children’s knowledge and understanding of art history, techniques, and cultural heritage.
Promote problem-solving, perseverance, and critical thinking through the exploration of materials and ideas.
Empower pupils to communicate their thoughts, emotions, and perspectives visually and imaginatively.
We are committed to ensuring that all children, regardless of ability or background, have access to a high-quality Art education that promotes self-worth, belonging, and achievement.
Implementation
Art is taught as part of our carefully sequenced, progressive curriculum, which provides pupils with the knowledge, skills, and techniques needed to develop as young artists. We implement this through:
A thematic, skills-based curriculum that builds progressively from EYFS to Year 6.
High-quality teaching that encourages experimentation and reflection, supported by knowledgeable staff.
Exposure to a diverse range of artists, movements, and cultures to foster appreciation and global awareness.
Opportunities for cross-curricular links, deepening children’s understanding across subjects.
Access to a wide variety of tools, materials, and media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital art.
Dedicated displays and exhibitions that celebrate and elevate children's artwork throughout the school and wider community.
Children are encouraged to explore their individual creativity while learning techniques with increasing precision and purpose.
Impact
The impact of our Art curriculum is seen in the confidence, imagination, and pride our pupils show in their work. By the end of their journey at Woodchurch Road Academy, pupils will:
Have developed a deep appreciation for the arts and an understanding of their place in the world.
Demonstrate a range of technical skills and the ability to express themselves effectively through visual media.
Show resilience and independence in their creative thinking and artistic choices.
Engage with feedback and reflect thoughtfully on their own work and the work of others.
Leave our school with a strong creative foundation that will support future learning, wellbeing, and personal expression.
Art at Woodchurch Road Academy is not just a subject—it is a means of empowering children to see the world differently, to challenge limitations, and to realise their own creative potential.
